Hoagland, owner and founder of Hoaglandscape, was born in Hartford, Conn.  He opened Hoaglandscape in 2002.  From the inauspicious beginnings of working out of the back of a small pick-up truck, he has transformed the company into one of the region’s most-trusted and highly regarded landscaping businesses.  His priorities for clients are quality and value.
Hoagland grew up in Greensboro and graduated with a communications degree from Appalachian State University in 1985, placing among the nation’s “Who’s Who Among the Nation’s Colleges and Universities.”
As a sportswriter, he won a N.Y. Times Chairman’s Award with the Spartanburg Herald-Journal in 1987.  His primary coverage responsibilities were local colleges and NASCAR racing.  He later served as a freelance writer for the Associated Press covering the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets.

In 1991, he entered a career in public relations and served as Pontiac’s NASCAR spokesman for nine years on the circuit.  During this time he worked with such championship drivers as Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace, Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart.  He retired from the NASCAR arena in 2000.

Hoagland is an avid sports enthusiast, regularly attending games at Appalachian State.  In 2008, he served as president of the school’s Yosef Club Advisory Board, overseeing the  athletic scholarship fund-raising organization.  He also enjoys reading Stephen King novels and books concentrating on World War II’s Eastern Front.

Hoagland married his wife and business partner, Christie, in May of 1995.  She is instrumental in the planning and development of Hoaglandscape.  She also works for Bank of America’s “green” efforts at going paperless.  Brian and Christie have no children, but adore spoiling their dogs “Bella” and “Fiddle.”

Steve Hoagland, Brian’s older brother, joined Hoaglandscape in July of 2007.  He has 18 years experience in the horticulture industry and still enjoys the hands-on technique as opposed to delegating.

Born in Hartford, Conn., in 1956, he attended Brevard College for a year before entering the U.S. Army in 1975.  He spent a tour of duty in then-West Germany and received the highest military honor in peacetime, The Army Accomodation Medal in 1981.

In 1991, he went to work as an assistant grounds manager at Wynlakes Golf and Country Club in Montgomery, Ala.  Four years later, he became the Grounds Manager.  He supervised the design of flowers beds that consisted of 30,000 annuals every six months, Christmas lights and holiday design that started in August of every year.

He has a daughter and two sons, and one granddaughter.  Steve enjoys college football and is a huge Alabama fan.  He also enjoys nature, a spiritual life and giving back to others.

Tony DeGaetano, Crew Supervisor

DeGaetano was born in 1977 in West Islip, N.Y.  He moved to North Carolina in 1997 and began his career in landscaping six years later.

He joined Hoaglandscape in September of 2008.  He started his landscaping career as a general laborer for another Charlotte landscaping contractor, but quickly worked himself up to a foreman position.  His duties included running crews, client communications, job estimating and bidding, and participating in and overseeing job work.

DeGaetano is a sports enthusiast who is a die-hard New York Jets and Yankees fan.  He enjoys spending his time with family.

Mark Hart, crewman

Hart was born in 1973 in Pittsfield, Mass.  He moved in North Carolina in 1996.

Hart joined Hoaglandscape in September of 2008.  Previously, he worked as a general mechanic for a few years before getting a job as a landscape laborer at Emerald Lake Country Club in Matthews, N.C.  There he was responsible for mowing greens, installing plants beds and planting trees, shrubs and flowers.

In his spare time, Hart enjoys radio controlled cars, working on automobiles, video games and disc golf.  He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Cramerton and have been married since May of 2004.  She is a novelist and also works at a Charlotte-based insurance company.  Hart and his wife have no children, but enjoy spending time with their dogs “Morrigan” and “Cadence.”
